First week of Fall Semester

Phew, the week is almost over. This has been one very LOOOOOONG week. I got so used to sleeping in over the summer so this week pretty much killed me getting up at 6:15am.

I have a full schedule this semester compared to all my previous semester. For the first time I have over 12 units (I have 13 LOL). My schedule consists of:

Math - M/W/F 11:30-12:45
Lab Animal Medicine & Care - M 3:40-9:00pm (although she'll let us out around 7pm)
Fish Management - T 5:40-10:00pm (and we will be there every minute until 10pm she says)
Canine Management - W 3:40-9:00 (same story as Monday ... get out around 7pm)
Work Experience with the greyhounds ..... Hours TBD

The Fish management will be fun on a personal level, but it really offers nothing towards my RVT degree but since they were accepting adds I jumped on it since I only had 11 units up til this point and this put me over the 12 I wanted (shooting for Deans or Presidents List this semester ... had I had 12 units these past 3 semesters I would have easily made the lists).

Canine Management will be an awesome class. I can't wait. We chose a breed of dog to do a power point presentation on and I am thrilled that I get to do one on the Australian Cattle Dog (that's what my Phoebe is !).

Lab Animal class is already making me sad because we have to euthanize a rat and do a necropsy on it. I will probably end up bawling my eyes out that night. I was already sad looking through the book at different things.

Math is .... well it's math. I love my teacher so far but I HATE that we don't use the book, we do all homework online and the book is online as well. It takes me 5 times as long to type in those stupid equations when I could easily just write the homework out. I am not liking it at all. Plus, I had to spend $80 on the online access code .... TWICE (Katy needed one too -- we have the same teacher, but different time period and you can't share a code because it also holds your grades, etc.) and you can't re-sell the code to someone else next semester. There goes $160 down the drain !!! At least with the book you can re-sell. They changed to a new edition this year (I had the old Math book from last year so even if I had to spend $120 on it ... at least we could have shared ... AND sold it to someone else next year. Note to self: For my final math class in spring ... check which teachers use the online and go with someone else !! hahaha.

So all in all I had a good week. Long ... and HOT .... and i'm tired ... but good. Now if only the parking situation could improve so I didn't have to get to school hours before my class just to get a spot (and also have to park a mile away from my class as the closer lots are all full by the time I get there around 8:30am).

Ooh scary ... i just applied for my first veterinary office job. This is a front office position but would work out nicely while still being in school. I am nervous. I haven't worked at a paying job for over 13 years. A paycheck of any kind will be very exciting.

Blog to come

Please be patient ... i'm starting this new blog and it's been over a year since I've worked with Blogger and I am trying to reacquaint myself with how to do everything.

This blog will be about my adventures in school, work experience, and the quest for a job that I will enjoy doing until it's time for me to retire. Yes, I'm a little old to be having a career change, but it's really never too late to follow your dreams and go for something you are passionate about.

I have been an animal lover my whole life. Ever since I was little, I was always bringing home some kind of animal, rescuing rodents that our cats had corned outside, tricking my mom into buying me various other creatures (telling her I needed them for school) and of course the classic act of crying my eyeballs out at the neighborhood pet store BEGGING her to PLEEEEEEEASE let me have a turtle (or fish, or hamster, or rabbit). Mom usually gave in (thank God she was an animal lover herself).

I am a student at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. Their RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician) program is great. The only problem is that is so crowded that it is taking me much longer than the estimated 2 years to complete. I am hoping that I will finish in June 2013 (same time as my youngest child graduates from high school !!) In the meantime, I am looking for an entry level position in a veterinary hospital so I can as much as I can in addition to going to school.
